Dyson Gen5 Detect review: A smart and efficient stick vacuum

At a glance

Expert’s Rating

Pros

  • Technically advanced, great performance
  • Laser that illuminates and visualizes dust
  • Integrated crevice nozzle
  • Effective filtration

Our Verdict

The Gen5 Detect a worthy successor to the V15 Detect. The 5th generation Hyperdymium motor is noticeably more powerful and the suction power is impressive. The display is more elaborate and more useful in practice. The handle-integrated crevice nozzle is ingenious and the improved laser in the nozzle detects even the smallest grains of dust on the floor.

Dyson’s stick vacuums are among the most popular and sought-after on the market. A countless number of models have been launched over the years, continuously improved and technically refined.

This autumn’s launches from the manufacturer are extensive and, in addition to a brand-new robot vacuum cleaner and two air purifiers, also include three new upright vacuum cleaners: the V15s Detect Submarine, the V12s Detect Slim Submarine (which can also mop floors with the included wet roller nozzle) and the Gen5 Detect, which is evaluated in this article.

A joint nozzle located inside the handle lets you access tighter spaces by detaching the handle from the main unit with the touch of a button. Ingenious!

Increased power

The Dyson Gen5 Detect is a direct successor to the V15 Detect model that we tested almost exactly two years ago, and although it is similar in both design and construction, there are a lot of exciting new features.

The design language follows the well-trodden and much discussed “futuristic” look, but Dyson was early with the so-called pistol grip, which most other manufacturers have adopted.

The battery is located at the bottom of the handle and is easily removable (extra batteries are sold separately). When fully charged, the battery is capable of up to 70 minutes of vacuuming, an improvement of 10 minutes compared to the V15 Detect. That may not sound revolutionary, but considering that the maximum suction power is now a whopping 280 AW compared to the previous 240 AW, it’s a definite improvement.

Trigger finally replaced

With the removal of the finger trigger, vacuuming is now initiated by an on/off button located just above the small display on the back cover and easily accessible with your thumb. Below the display is a function button that allows you to choose which of the three different power modes to use: Eco, Auto, or the most powerful Boost mode, where the motor spins up to 135,000 rpm. Pressing the same button for a second longer takes you to the settings menu for language setting and whether or not to activate the warning signals.

The built-in Dyson piezo sensor measures the number of particles and levels of dust in the intake air and automatically increases the suction power if necessary. The display shows you the number of particles captured in real time and depending on the degree of dirtiness, the bars in the chart change color, from blue for really dirty to green for clean. It’s handy because you can use this information to determine where you need to do a little extra vacuuming.

The vacuum cleaner comes with a bunch of different nozzles, including one for hard floors and one equipped with an angled green laser and a customized lens that spreads the laser light in front of the nozzle and makes all the dust on the floor visible. The technology is not new–the laser nozzle has been included with various Dyson models for a couple of years–but it has now been further improved for an even clearer view of the dust on the floor.

Smart solution with integrated joint nozzle

The second nozzle is motorised and more all-round, with nylon bristles for removing dirt from carpets and anti-static carbon fibre wires for hard floors. The nozzle also has a built-in “comb” that automatically removes hair from the brush head.

In addition to these, a combination nozzle and a smaller nozzle with a conical brush head for animal hair and longer hairs are included. In addition (and this is a long-awaited novelty), a joint nozzle located inside the handle lets you access tighter spaces by detaching the handle from the main unit with the touch of a button. Ingenious!
