LG C1: The LG C1, ranked second in our Best 65-Inch TVs of 2023 rating, is an OLED smart TV that delivers performance pretty close to the Sony A90J at a lower price point. This LG TV also offers near-perfect blacks, Dolby Vision, variable refresh rate, and excellent contrast thanks to the self-lit pixels which you get from OLED technology. Professional reviewers note that it’s not as bright as some other OLED TV models and shows glare in some rooms, but it is excellent in dark rooms. LG G1: Tied for third place in our rating, the LG G1 is a close sibling of the LG C1 with many of the same features, including Dolby Vision. However, it’s specifically designed for wall mounting. The LG G1 OLED TV also features LG’s Evo OLED panel, which has another layer of emitting diodes using deuterium. Professional reviewers note that the Evo panel is somewhat brighter than the panel used in the LG C1 (the company claims it is about 20% brighter). This addresses one of the main drawbacks of the C1 OLED TV, but the price of the LG G1 is several hundred dollars higher, so you’ll want to weigh whether the additional brightness is worth the cost given your needs. If you watch TV in a relatively dark room, this 4K TV will probably suit your needs adequately.
Toshiba Fire TV Edition: The Toshiba Fire TV Edition is tied for third place in our rating. It has made impressive strides with its M550 series launched in 2021. It has a 4K LED display, not OLED, but reviewers say it matches or beats many high-end rivals on picture quality and offers excellent sound even without an external sound bar. The least expensive 65-inch TV on our list by a wide margin at $449.99, it offers a lot of value for the money and is good for gamers with its technology known as 480 Motion Rate. This refreshes up to 480 images per second to reduce blur and improve clarity for fast action content.

Samsung QN85A: The Samsung QN85A, which ties for fifth place in our rating, uses a proprietary screen technology called Neo QLED. This is a step up from many of Samsung’s other QLED models and adds brightness to the standard LED technology. Reviewers say the QN85A is a good all-around 4K TV that is particularly well suited for situations where you want a wide viewing area. It also can handle any lighting condition and has LED dimming technology that helps make up for the lack of perfect blacks that OLED models like the LG C1 provide. Samsung’s Tizen operating system gets good reviews and allows you to use a wide array of apps. It’s also very thin, which makes it great for wall mounting.
Sony Bravia X90J: Also in fifth place, the Sony Bravia X90J is considered an excellent choice for a midrange 4K LED TV. Professional reviewers say it has outstanding color and picture quality. It gets good reviews for just about any usage, including gaming. The Bravia X90J also has four HDMI ports, including two HDMI 2.1 ports for gamers, which makes it easy to connect peripherals. It offers good value but will have more glare than more expensive OLED TVs. The viewing angle also isn’t as wide as that of some rivals, which makes it less suitable for a large room or watching TV in groups.
TCL 6-Series: The TCL 6-Series ties for seventh place in our Best TVs of 2023 and gives you a choice of the Google TV or Roku TV interface. Its QLED (quantum dot light-emitting diode) technology delivers brighter and more accurate colors than standard LCD TVs but is less expensive than OLED (organic light-emitting diode). The 6 Series with its mini-LED backlight and 4K resolution gets high marks for picture brightness and contrast. Its sound quality is also highly rated. It is among the more affordable TVs in its class, although not as sleek and stylish as some other TVs on the market.
Sony X80J: Also tied for seventh place in our list, Sony’s entry-level 4K television delivers good performance but doesn’t have the wow factor of some of its rivals and lacks some features found on higher-end models. This means below-par overall brightness and blacks which are not as impressive as on other Sonys or competing brands. It is good enough for most purposes, including casual gaming, and is the least expensive Sony 4K model you can buy.

Samsung QN90A: The Samsung flagship QN90A gets excellent scores for reviewers in every category including movies, sports, and gaming. Some reviewers say this TV with Samsung’s Neo QLED technology has the best picture of any non-OLED TV. It has outstanding brightness and color and is less reflective than similar models. An interesting feature of the QN90A is its Eco Remote, which has a solar panel on the back to charge the remote without needing batteries. It ties for seventh place in our Best TVs of 2023 list.
How Much Does a 65-inch TV Cost?
There are some bargains to be had in good quality 65-inch TVs, but if you want the latest technology and newest features, you often will pay a lot more. The TVs in our rating range from under $500 to more than $3,000 based on list prices, which may frequently be discounted. Because manufacturers are constantly introducing new models with new features, you should decide whether those features are worth the extra cost or if the older version will suffice. For example, the OLED TVs in our rating are priced above $2,000, but high-quality LED TVs can be purchased for just over $1,000 at list prices. But you also need to consider how long you want to keep your television; if your set is too old you might feel a need to upgrade after a year or two.
What Size TV Should I Get?
The optimal size for a TV depends on a range of factors, including how you use it and the size of the room. Many of the latest smart TVs have 4K resolution so you can sit reasonably close for an immersive experience without noticing imperfections in the images. At the same time, you may not need a jumbo-size screen if your room isn’t huge. For the best experience for general viewing, the TV screen should fill about 30% of your field of vision, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers says. According to AV Blend, that translates to around 7.5 feet away for a 55-inch TV and just over nine feet away for a 65-inch screen. The size will make a big difference in cost: most of our best 65-inch TVs are at list prices well over $1,000 but 55- or 50-inch models will be several hundred dollars less.
If you’re using the TV for gaming or as a PC monitor, there are different considerations. Gamers often sit closer to the TV and thus can get by with smaller screens. In most cases, 43 to 55 inches is optimal. In a small room, Eagle TV Mounting says you may want to go as low as 32 inches. Also remember that the best gaming TVs often require a more robust processor and features to help keep up with fast action, which add to the cost. If you opt for a TV of 65 inches or more that brings up the price even more and it may be overkill.
Similarly, you may not need a supersized screen for a TV doubling as a PC monitor since most people sit close to their desks. In most cases, 27 inches is adequate and anything over 55 inches might end up giving you a headache. This is good news for the budget conscious since bargains abound for the smaller TVs, in some cases less than $200.

Our 360 Reviews team draws on this same unbiased approach to rate the products that you use every day. To build our ratings, we researched more than 48 TVs and analyzed 18 reviews. Our 360 Reviews team does not take samples, gifts, or loans of products or services we review. All sample products provided for review are donated after review. In addition, we maintain a separate business team that has no influence over our methodology or recommendations.
The following describes our 360 approach to researching TVs to guide prospective consumers.
1. We researched the companies and products people care most about.
U.S. News analyzed and compared a variety of publicly available data, including internet search data, to determine which TVs Americans are most interested in. We found 48 TVs that stand out in terms of volume of searches and research among consumers, as well as across the different rating sources. After conducting a thorough analysis, we were able to condense the initial list to the 10 overall Best TVs. With the companies determined, we conducted a comprehensive research on their features to create a general layout of what consumers should know to assist with their purchasing decisions.
We then compared the available services provided by our top TVs across several criteria, including but not limited to cost, licensing, probability of being on time, customer satisfaction, and flexibility of services. Research shows that these are the most important criteria for people shopping for TVs.
2. We created objective 360 Overall Ratings based on an analysis of third-party reviews.
U.S. News’ 360 Reviews team applied an unbiased methodology that includes opinions from professional reviews as well as consumer reviews.
Our scoring methodology is based on a composite analysis of the ratings and reviews published by credible third-party professional and consumer review sources. The ratings are not based on personal opinions or experiences of U.S. News. To calculate the ratings:
(a) We compiled two types of third-party ratings and reviews:
- Professional Ratings and Reviews. Many independent sources have published their assessments of TVs and their plans. We consider several of these third-party reviews to be reputable and well-researched. However, professional reviewers often make recommendations that contradict one another. Rather than relying on a single source, U.S. News believes consumers benefit most when these opinions and recommendations are considered and analyzed collectively with an objective, consensus-based methodology.
- Consumer Ratings and Reviews. U.S. News also reviewed published consumer ratings and reviews of TVs. Sources with a sufficient number of quality consumer ratings and reviews were included in our scoring model.
Please note that not all professional and consumer rating sources met our criteria for objectivity. Therefore, some sources were excluded from our model.
(b) We standardized the inputs to create a common scale.
The third-party review source data were collected in a variety of forms, including ratings, recommendations, and accolades. Before including each third-party data point into our scoring equation, we had to standardize it so that it could be compared accurately with data points from other review sources. We used the scoring methodology described below to convert these systems to a comparable scale.
The 360 scoring process first converted each third-party rating into a common 0 to 5 scale. To balance the distribution of scores within each source’s scale, we used a standard deviation (or Z-Score) calculation to determine how each company’s score compared to the source’s mean score. We then used the Z-Score to create a standardized U.S. News score using the method outlined below:
- Calculating the Z-Score: The Z-Score represents a data point’s relation to the mean measurement of the data set. The Z-Score is negative when the data point is below the mean and positive when it’s above the mean; a Z-Score of 0 means it’s equal to the mean. To determine the Z-Score for each third-party rating of a company, we calculated the mean of the ratings across all companies evaluated by that third-party source. We then subtracted the mean from the company’s rating and divided it by the standard deviation to produce the Z-Score.
- Calculating the T-Score: We used a T-Score calculation to convert the Z-Score to a 0-100 scale by multiplying the Z-Score by 10. To ensure that the mean was equal across all data points, we added our desired scoring mean (between 0 and 10) to the T-Score to create an adjusted T-Score.
- Calculating the common-scale rating: We divided the adjusted T-Score, which is on a 100-point scale, by 20 to convert the third-party rating to a common 0-5 point system.
(c) We calculated the 360 Overall Score based on a weighted-average model.
We assigned “source weights” to each source used in the consensus scoring model based on our assessment of how much the source is trusted and recognized by consumers and how much its published review process indicates that it is both comprehensive and editorially independent. The source weights are assigned on a 1-5 scale. Any source with an assigned weight less than one was excluded from the consensus scoring model.
Finally, we combined the converted third-party data points using a weighted average formula based on source weight. This formula calculated the consensus score for each product, which we call the 360 Overall Rating.
